SERDANG, May 20 – The World Bee Day 2022 celebration at the national level has been held at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with the theme "Kelestarian Lebah: Pemangkin Biodiversiti, Pencetus Ekonomi” (Bee Sustainability: Biodiversity Catalyst, Economic Trigger).

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI), Datuk Seri Ahmad Hamzah, said the World Bee Day celebration this year is seen as an event effectively raising public awareness of the importance and value of bees in life.

"This theme is chosen because it takes into account the role of the local community, including industry players who are growing rapidly for the need to maintain the sustainability of bees and the environment," he said.

Also involved in the National World Bee Day 2022 celebration were the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, UPM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nur Azura Adam, MARDI, Department of Agriculture Malaysia (DOA), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the Federation of Malaysian Kelulut Entrepreneurs Association (GPUKM).

According to the UPM Board of Directors Chairman, Tengku Syarif Laksamana Perlis Dato' Seri DiRaja Syed Razlan Syed Putra Jamalullail, the World Bee Day celebration today is to recognise those who have made significant contributions to the conservation and preservation of bees and promote them to the community.

"Kelulut honey industry in Malaysia has the potential to grow in line with the National Kelulut Honey Industry Development Plan 2020-2030 launched last November 2019 as one of the government's efforts to elevate the kelulut honey industry as a new, sustainable and strong source of income," he said.- UPM
