UPM students make clean sweep in Software Category at Software & SAS BDA Hackath

CYBERJAYA, Nov 22 – Bachelor of Computer Science students from the Computer Science & Information Technology Faculty (FSKTM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), made a clean sweep of all the prizes under the software category at the ‘Software & SAS BDA Hackathon 2015’ event.

The three teams of FSKTM students won the main prize of RM1,500 cash, second prize (RM1,000) and the third prize of RM500, bringing home with them a total of RM3,000.

The first prize for a project entitled ‘RemLock’ came in the form of a keyless door system which was converted into smart door locks that could identify house occupants or residents through “IMEI” and address through a “Media Access Control” (MAC) smart phone.

The second prize was for an innovative system called ‘Queue Management System’ with the title ‘Qtime’ while the third prize  featured additional elements in gamification in the management of buses called “Bus Pursuit”. All the prizes were for web-based systems and applications.

All the winning projects which featured web-based systems and mobile applications were innovative ideas developed by students.

The programme lasted for 10 days – eight days of training at UPM and the remaining days at MSC Malaysia Knowledge-Worker Development Centre (KDC), Cyberjaya. It was jointly held with the cooperation of TalentCorp Malaysia, Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), Dream Catcher and SAS Malaysia.

The objective of the programme was to produce quality and dynamic human capital and experts through human development training, entrepreneurship, web and mobile application, taught by experienced instructors.


A total of 120 undergraduates from four public and private universities in the Central Region of Malaysia took part in the programme. UPM was represented by 36 FSKTM students who participated and monitored students’ activities during the running of the programme.

Such a programme is able to augment the capability and expertise of technical students, amplify their marketability and entrepreneurship, in particular the “tech startups” which can help contribute towards economic development. – UPM.
