UPM chemist receives Malaysian Institute of Chemistry Gold Medal Award

SERDANG, January 9 – Prof. Datuk ChM. Ts. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin, a lecturer from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has been awarded the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM) Gold Medal Award, presented by the IKM President, Datuk ChM. Dr. Soon Ting Kueh at the Chemistry Night Ceremony recently.

The award is a recognition towards the excellence of Prof. Datuk ChM. Ts. Dr. Taufiq Yap in the field of chemistry in Malaysia.

His expertise is in the production and application of catalysts, particularly in the production of sustainable renewable energy using green technology. He also founded the Centre of Research for Catalysis Science and Technology at UPM in 2008.

Prof. Datuk ChM. Ts. Dr. Taufiq said he was very excited about being awarded the Gold Medal Award and was confident that he would continue to commit excellently. Prof. Datuk ChM Ts. Dr. Taufiq Yap also received the National Young Scientist Award in 2002, The Outstanding Young Malaysian Award (2008), Top Research Scientist Malaysia (2013), Malaysia's Research STAR Award (2018) and was listed as the World's Top 2% Scientist by Stanford University, United States of America.

"I hope this will directly give the inspiration to carry out research that gives an impact to the society and the country as well as to produce chemists who are not only prominent in Malaysia but also around the world," he said.

Meanwhile, the award is the highest recognition from IKM that a researcher from UPM has ever received. - UPM
