By: Dr. Cheng Kai Wah

SERDANG, Jan 20 – Some 360 participants have virtually participated in the Faculty of Human Ecology (FEM) Postgraduate Talks – Strategies for Publishing in High Impact Journals, recently.

This is the third webinar organised by the Human Ecology Postgraduate Students’ Association (HEPSA) in collaboration with the Deputy Dean (Postgraduate Studies, Industry and Community Relations) Office, FEM, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), via the Zoom Meeting Communications and Facebook Live.

The three-hour webinar aimed to explain the importance for a researcher to publish in high impact journals, to learn the tips to write a high impact journal, to know the guidelines to choose a high impact journal publisher, to determine the authors’ common mistakes in paper writing, and to understand the expectation of reviewers in terms of the high impact journal writing.

Moderator of the webinar is FEM Teaching Assistant, Dr. Cheng Kai Wah, while Research Officer at the Institute for Social Science Studies (IPSAS), UPM, Dr. Hayrol Azril Mohamed Shaffril is the panelist.

Dr. Hayrol advised all postgraduate students not to be afraid to make mistakes when writing an article.

“You should be aware that there is no such thing as a perfect article. We should stay away from the perfectionist syndrome because it will prolong the process and duration for article submission.

“Always be positive and learn from your mistakes. You may seek assistance from professionals, if necessary,” he said.

Dr. Hayrol further mentioned that postgraduate students should understand and confirm their graduation requirements, while lecturers should double-check with their Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) so that they could submit their articles to a suitable publisher.

“The Citation Indexed Journal (CIJ) publication platforms include the Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), and Malaysian Citation Index (MyCite).

“Different universities have different graduation requirements for their students. Hence, please confirm the latest graduation requirements with School of Graduate Studies (SGS), UPM,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Cheng said the video recordings of the webinar could be assessed by all postgraduate students through the HEPSA social media account. They are also encouraged to subscribe and follow HEPSA on Facebook (@FEM.HEPSA), Telegram (t.me/FEMHEPSA), and Instagram (@fem_hepsa) to keep up to date with FEM postgraduate announcements and studies information. – UPM
