KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 – A lecturer and also a researcher at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Prof. Dr. Mohd Hair Bejo, was awarded 2018 Merdeka Award for the Health, Science and Technology category in recognition for his expert contribution to people, the country and the world.

Prof Hair was awarded on his outstanding contribution and instrumental role in advancing efforts towards sustainable food production through the development and commercialisation of chicken disease vaccines in the prevention of Gumboro disease that benefits poultry industry in Malaysia and internationally.

Prof. Hair was among the seven outstanding individuals who received 2018 Merdeka Award according to the five categories presented by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin, who is the royal patron of the Merdeka Award here today. Also present at the event was Raja Permaisuri Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim.

The five categories are Health, Science and Technology (two recipients), Education and Community, Environment, Outstanding Scholastic Achievement (two recipients) and Outstanding Contribution to the People of Malaysia.

"This award has given a significant meaning to my research team and all researchers as it increases motivation to convert an idea into an invention, innovation and commercialisation. This award also fosters a culture of excellence and increases a huge opportunity”, said Prof. Hair in his recipient speech.

Prof. Hair was awarded the WVPA – Merial Innovation in Vaccination Award last year for his contribution in research, development and commercialisation of the vaccine of Gumboro disease virus that caused a high rate of chicken mortality and immunosuppression in chickens in Asia in the 1990s.

The Merdeka Award was first established by PETRONAS, ExxonMobil and Shell in 2007 to recognise and reward individuals and organisations whose works and achievements have contributed to the nation’s growth and inspired Malaysians.

Each winner received a certificate, a trophy, an artwork and cash, as well as the honour to be recorded in the country’s history, together with 44 individuals and two organisations which had received the award previously. - UPM
