MELAKA, Feb 9 – Unversiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Mohd Roslan Sulaiman, has paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka, Tun Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, at the Office of His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka here.
Researchers from the Institute for Mathematical Research (INSPEM) who joined the visit were the Director, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rezal Dato ’Kamel Ariffin; Head of the Laboratory of Ethnomathematics and Didactics (LED), Prof. Dr. Rohaidah Kamaruddin; LED Science Officer, Dr. Mohd Rohaizat Abdul Wahab, and INSPEM Publication Officer, Norazlida Aminuddin.
The purpose of the visit was to obtain the consent of His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka for the proposed research and construction of the Mendam Berahi vessel in Melaka.
The Mendam Berahi vessel, a ship recorded in an old Malay manuscript, Hikayat Hang Tuah, will be used as the main reference in the building of the Mendam Berahi vessel’s blueprint.
The Ethnomathematics and Didactics Laboratory, INSPEM, will ensure that the actual calculations and measurements of the Mendam Berahi vessel in the old manuscript are translated as accurately as possible into the modern metric system.
The proposed construction is also to make the Mendam Berahi vessel an iconic and main attraction of the tourism industry in Melaka.
The courtesy visit was also attended by those who agreed to fund the research and construction. His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka supported the effort.
The bilateral meeting also discussed the strategic cooperation that can be forged between the Melaka State Government and UPM on various issues. At the end of the meeting, His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka expressed interest in paying a visit to UPM. - UPM
