UPM Vice Chancellor Encourages New International Postgraduates to Explore Malaysia’s Hospitality

SERDANG, 26 Sept – UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris, expressed her aspiration to see students especially international students explore the country’s hospitality, in her speech during the oath-taking ceremony for new postgraduate students at the School of Graduate Studies (SGS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

She also cited on how multiculturalism is a unique part of Malaysia and how the country is home to hundreds of colourful celebrations.

Prof Aini also stressed on the university’s role in carrying out research and disseminating its finding to the society.

“We also must ensure that research discoveries are accepted, acknowledged and trusted by the world,” she further explained.

Additionally, she reminded new postgraduate students on the importance of passion in their field of studies because she believes that passion creates excitement in taking action.

A total of 1,193 postgraduate students attended the oath-taking ceremony.

1,296 students registered with SGS for the 2017/2018 academic session with 336 PhD candidates and 933 master students. Of this number, 541 are male students while the rest are female students.

 

                                                                                                 

 

“From the total number of new students’ 25% or 299 new students are international students with a majority of them from Nigeria, Iraq and China” said SGS Dean, Prof. Dr. Robiah Yunus.

Yi Li, a new international student from China who is pursuing her Master’s Degree in Business Management considers UPM as her preferred choice because of the university’s high ranking and reputation as a public university in Malaysia.

“UPM’s impressive ranking gives me a good prospect,” explained Yi Li.

While Raditya Najmi from Indonesia, said that the Master’s programme offered by UPM provides him with a higher chance to apply his findings in relevant industries.

Najmi, a former bachelor’s student of UPM, is pursuing his Master’s Degree in Food Safety. He believes that there are plenty of impressive projects and wide scopes that would be very helpful for his major, here in UPM.

Similar opinions were expressed by Eugene Tuoboreoge, another Master’s student from Nigeria, majoring in Software Engineering. He believes that UPM is able to provide a wider and greater chance for students to innovate and develop.

According to Eugene, UPM has a conducive and supporting environment where students would be able to concentrate on their studies. He also has confidence that Malaysia is a country that is suitable for any kind of commercial field with its own progressive economic structure.

Samea, a new PhD student from Iraq, majoring in Environmental Health has other reasons in choosing UPM to pursue his studies. He opts for UPM because of its friendly atmosphere, as he has many friends here and instantly feels pretty much like at home.

“I simply like the people, and I love the environment as well; I can feel that this place will give me a better opportunity,” he said.
