SERDANG, Oct 24 - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) strengthened its 34th ranking of Asia's top universities in QS Asia University Ranking 2019 by making a 2 step jump in the ranking.

UPM also maintained its position as the country's second-best university after Universiti Malaya in the ranking for five consecutive years.

UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dato' Dr. Aini Ideris said UPM's best achievement in the ranking was for excellence in internationalisation.

"We achieved high scores for the student exchanges indicators (inbound and outbound). Other higher scores were also seen for internationalization indicators such as International Research Network, International Faculty and International Students.

"UPM's continuous initiatives to enhance international collaborations through various programmes have resulted in the increase in the internationalisation indicators," she said.

Prof. Aini said UPM's continuous commitment to strengthen its international network has attracted students, researchers and international academic staff.

She added that improvements in the ranking were also due to the continuous efforts and support of the staff at various levels in adapting to the culture of excellence, sustainability and integrity in UPM.

Prof. Aini said UPM will focus on several initiatives as follows:

  1. Strengthen research collaboration with the industry, society and international partners. Increase the number of national and international partners.

  1. Enhance high impact research and development programmes.

  1. Increase the quantity and quality of research publications.

  1. Promotes university branding and visibility

  1. Improve teaching environment and facilities

"The performance in the ranking is important because ranking can provide a benchmark to measure the university’s performance globally and be beneficial for a better tertiary education.

"This year's growth plays a bigger role in shaping the opinions and perceptions of stakeholders (students, government agencies, industry, parents, the public and international partners) that can lead to positive reputation and income generation for UPM," said Prof. Aini. - UPM
