PULAU REDANG (TERENGGANU) – The Faculty of Human Ecology (FEM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), with the cooperation of Sekolah Kebangsaan Pulau Redang, Kuala Terengganu, held a  RedangJunior@UPM programme for SK Pulau Redang pupils to experience life of an undergraduate at higher learning institutions (IPT).

Head of programme, Dr. Muslihah Hasbullah said this educational transformation programme was aimed at helping to enhance the academic achievement of pupils and to instill positive and benevolent traits in them.

“The objective of this programme is to boost education through experiential learning  by way of exploring the process of learning outside the classroom. The presence of pupils and their teachers at UPM shows the network of cooperation between FEM and this adopted school,” she said.

She also said, the programme was a continuation of Jelajah Siswa Kembara Insan 3 programme (JESKI 3) which took the form of community network and educational transformation activities carried out by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies (JPMPK) FEM in Pulau Redang for three consecutive years (2014 to 2016).

“Through such cooperation, the programme has been recognized as a high-impact programme and continues to be the adopted programme for FEM in 2015. This kind of programme is important to expose pupils to lifetime learning activities and to instill deep quest for knowledge in them,” she added.

UPM Master of Science (Human Development) graduate, Nurhilmiyani Ismail, who is programme facilitator, said the task required her to assist the pupils to boost their self-confidence and soft skills as well as enabling her to impart her knowledge with the pupils.

“This programme helps me to enhance my communication skills in interacting with the pupils. My hope is that Pulau Redang pupils will study harder to achieve excellence in their studies,” she said.

The programme, held with the help of Batu Rakit State Assemblyman,  JPMPK FEM and Sekolah Kebangsaan Pulau Redang, Kuala Terengganu, saw some 31 pupils and eight teachers taken for a tour of UPM in a day-long visit.

They were taken for a tour of UPM Edu Park – the Deer Farm, Animals Anatomy Muzeum at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Human Anatomy Muzeum at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

It is hoped that this early exposure on learning and life in campus will open up their minds in pursuit of higher education.

They also managed to learn about financial management through “Kit Bijak Wang” game under the guidance of  Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohd Fazli Sabri. – UPM.
