UPM organises Golden Jubilee Poetry Poster Competition in conjunction with UPM 50th Anniversary

 

SERDANG, June 18 - Students from a credited co-curriculum course, QKB2109 Traditional Oral Performance, in collaboration with the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Arts and Cultural Centre (PKKSSAAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), have organised the UPM Golden Jubilee Poetry Poster Competition in conjunction with the UPM 50th Anniversary Celebration.

The programme was conducted for two weeks, from June 6 to 17, 2022, and the closing ceremony was held in hybrid mode at the Academic Complex A (KAA) and broadcasted live through the Zoom application.

Director of UPM Golden Jubilee Poetry Poster Competition Programme, Maryam Sakinah, said the programme aimed to introduce and inculcate students' interest in Malay poetry by creating a student community that loves and reminisces the art of the nation's heritage.

"The UPM Golden Jubilee Poetry Poster Competition is an initiative to ensure the UPM community is now more familiarised themselves with the art of poetry and to ensure that the poetry will not be forgotten as it has been a unique national identity since a long time ago," he said.

A senior lecturer from the Malay Language Department, Faculty of Modern Languages ​​and Communication (FBMK), UPM, Dr. Shahril Nizam Sha'ri, said the process of producing a poem is challenging because it requires thoughts on the foreshadow and meaning of each stanza produced.

"Exposure to the Poem Writing Workshop can provide students with clear pictures and techniques in producing Malay poetry," he said.

Programme facilitator, Nik Zaini Peei, said the programme not only introduced and instilled students' interest in the art of Malay poetry, but it also empowered talent and opened opportunities for students to get to know and learn the art of Malay poetry more in-depth.

"Through this competition, I can see that UPM students really have an interest and talent in producing Malay poetry, which is proven through the participation of UPM students from different ethnicities," he said.

Student of Bachelor of Economics, School of Business and Economics (SPE), UPM, Aiman ​​Izzuddin Mohamad, said he was honoured to participate in the UPM Golden Jubilee Poetry Poster Competition because he was able to gain knowledge in producing Malay poems.

"This is my first experience participating in a poetry-themed poster competition in UPM, and I am excited to be given the opportunity to gain knowledge in poem writing through the poetry writing workshop held," he said.

The UPM Golden Jubilee Poetry Poster Competition was won by a student of Doctor Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ahmad Akram Mukhlis Mohd Yazid, who succeeded in bringing home a TGV movie ticket voucher. The second place was attained by a student of Bachelor of Economics with Honours, School of Business and Economics, Aiman ​​Izzuddin Mohamad, who managed to bring home a Netflix premium account voucher. The third place was secured by a student of Bachelor of Science in Human Development with Information Technology, Faculty of Human Ecology, Nurul Syahirah Muhamad Halmee, who successfully brought home a grab voucher worth RM30.

The UPM Golden Jubilee Poetry Poster Competition was well received by many multi-racial UPM participants as well as several entries from international students and outsiders. - UPM
