UPM lecturer becomes first Malaysian appointed Chair of Global Alliance Board of Directors

SERDANG – A lecturer from the Department of Community Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Kulanthayan KC Mani, is the first Malaysian and Asian representative appointed as new Chair of the Board of Directors of Global Alliance, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) for road safety, for a two-year term (2022-2024).

Global Alliance was founded in 2011; where at that time, it was under the World Health Organisation (WHO), but currently, it is an independent organisation and registered under the Swiss civil law based in Zurich, Switzerland.

Prof. Dr. Kulanthayan has been a board member since 2019, and he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Transportation Engineering from UPM in 2002 and a Diploma in Traffic Safety from Lund University, Sweden, in 2007. He was also a recipient of the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in 2017.

At the national level, he has been a member of the National Road Safety Council of Malaysia (MKJR) since 2013 and the Road Safety Affiliate of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) since 2020.

Born in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, he is also the Executive Director of Safe Kids Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

On the other hand, Global Alliance was established in response to requests from the global NGOs to seek space for the knowledge sharing sessions and to advocate for the field of road safety and the rights of road accident victims. – UPM
