SERDANG, March 20 – The Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK) and Centre for Industry Relations and Networks (CiRNeT), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), jointly held a CEO@FacultyProgramme which saw Communication and Multimedia Ministry Secretary-General, Dato’ Seri Dr. Sharifah Zarah Syed Ahmad, providing an insight on the industrial sector to students.

During the sharing of knowledge session, she called on women to embrace knowledge and digital skills and explore the market in Malaysia.

“There are various sectors that can be explored by women, including big data analysis and algorithms for big data which are badly needed by the present employment industry.

“Women should not just have that skills of making online purchases but other skills like in the development of mobile phone applications to assist the society,” she said when delivering her speech “Embracing Digital Era: Roles of Women’ to some 120 UPM students who majored in Communications.

Programme Advisor, Dr. Nurul ‘Ain Mohd Hassan said such a programme could be of help in improving the existing curriculum through sharing of knowledge and experiences by various parties with vast experiences.

"It is hoped that through this programme, we could boost participation of the industrial sector as part of the country’s higher education system through sharing of experiences and expertise by key industrial leaders,” she added.

Last year, Higher Education Ministry appointed four Chief Executive officers (CEOs) and senior government officials – AirAsia Group Chief Executive Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Rolls-Royce Group Director of Research and Technology, Dr. Richard Parker; Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri  Dr. Ali Hamsa and President and Group Chief Executive of Sime Darby Berhad, Tan Sri  Mohd Bakke Salleh – to be in this programme.

Among others their functions are to share their experiences and knowledge on the corporate world with UPM staff and to guide them to enhance graduates’ employability and marketability as well as to develop students’ holistic and soft skills.

Through this programme, industrial collaborations could be made through sharing of information and experiences as well as holistic development of new integrated assessment frameworks. – UPM.
