RM50K for UPM Tamil Research Fund

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 8 – The Ministry of Human Resources contributed RM50,000 to the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK), UPM for the Tamil Language Research Fund to expand its research and publications in the Tamil language.

The contribution was handed over by the Minister of Human Resources, Datuk Dr. S. Subraminiam to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mua’ti @ Zamri Ahmad, the Dean of FBMK, UPM.

Datuk Dr. S. Subramaniam said the opportunities provided by UPM for Tamil language research are not specific to the Indian community but other communities should be encouraged to learn the language.

“In this era of globalization, students need to improve their knowledge in second language skills, particularly to improve themselves and for better job prospects.

“We do not only need a workforce that is fluent in Malay, but also requires talent in mastering foreign language,” he said.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mua’ti @ Zamri Ahmad said he hopes the fund would be used by students as an aid for research, publications and Tamil language graduate studies at UPM.

He added that FBMK is currently seeking research funds from abroad, among them in Mauritius, South Africa, India and the United States.
