SERDANG, April 7 – A special Hari Raya Aidilfitri aid of RM500 to all civil servants Grade 56 and below will somehow be able to ease the burden of civil servants.

Lecturer from School of Business and Economics (SPE), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anuar Shah Bali Mahomed, said the aid would help the civil servants who had spent in March last year on their children's schooling.

“The aid reduces the burden of civil servants for Hari Raya, especially considering the high expenses for their children to return to school in March to early April.

“The expenses for children to enrol in kindergarten or nursery now are also higher. If there are several children in school, the expenses will be even higher,” he said.

The special aid involved an allocation of RM923 million to benefit more than two million civil servants and retirees.

He said although there would be an increase in government spending, the bonus would benefit traders, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

“If we look at the money channelled to the civil servants, it will be spent on buying daily necessities and covering the cost of school expenses earlier.

"Actually, there is a cycle there where at the same time it can also help traders, including SMEs, as spending using the bonus to buy goods will benefit SMEs," he said. -UPM
