Jun Hoong Heartily Welcomed By UPM Staff and Students at KLIA

SEPANG, 24 July – Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia student, Cheong Jun Hoong who won the 10-metre platform event in the 2017 FINA World Aquatic Championship in Budapest, Hungary recently was welcomed by UPM staff and students at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

A total of 43 students from the Centre of Foundation Studies for Agricultural Science and 30 UPM staff welcomed her arrival. Among UPM top officers present were the Director of UPM Sports Academy, Prof. Dr. Shamala Subramaniam, Deputy Director of Corporate Strategy and Communications Office, Dr. Abd. Rahim Abu Talib and Head of UPM Sports Centre, Dr. Hanafiah Ayub.

Besides UPM, the Perak state government sent 10 supporters while the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Za’ba, Kuala Pilah also sent 30 students to celebrate Jun Hoong’s arrival.

Jun Hoong, 27, a Bachelor of Communication student from UPM, successfully defeated a Chinese diver who has long dominated the women’s 10-metre platform event, Si Yajie.

Cheong Jun Hoong made the golden dive after collecting 397.50 points. The Chinese diver for the Silver medal collected 396.00 points, and the Bronze medal (391.95 points) was won by Ren Qian.

The event won by the Ipoh-born is the first gold medal for the country throughout its participation in the World Aquatic Championship.

UPM will hold a ceremony to celebrate Jun Hoong and other excellent athletes with the Vice Chancellor soon.
