KUALA LUMPUR, June 22: C-Heart Team from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) emerged top at the Tech Plan Grand Prix in Malaysia recently and will represent the country at the Agri Science GP in Tokyo, Japan.
Thirteen teams with their original business plan gathered to showcase their ideas at the very first Tech Plan Grand Prix in Malaysia, held at the Research Management and Innovation Complex in University of Malaya on June 22.
C-Heart Team business plan was on the “Production of supercritical carbon dioxide extracted C-Heart Oil” presented by Dr. Khoo Hock Eng, Associate Professor Dr. Azrina Azlan and Prof Amin Ismail.
The business plan is to extract dabai oil (C-Heart oil), from dabai fruit using a supercritical carbon dioxide. The extracted dabai oil contains bioactive phytochemicals that can prevent certain diseases.
The innovation is a specialty oil without toxicity, and they postulated that C-Heart oil can prevent or improve cardiovascular-related complications.
The oily pulp of dabai has about 25 per cent fat with total phenolics level similar to olive oil. Dabai is one of the indigenous fruits in Borneo island.
With the win, C-Heart Team will represent Malaysia and compete with Japanese teams and other winning teams from Singapore and Taiwan at the Agri Science GP in Tokyo on October 3.
First runnerup was Flash Team from University of Malaya comprising Darween Reza Sabri, Chu Wei Hong and Vincent Lok, with their “Mini Desktop size selective laser sintering.”
Second runnerup went to N-ext Team comprising Chen Li Chau and Dr. Amalina Muhammad Afifi with their business plan, “Nanofibre wound dressing.”
Director of UMCIC, University of Malaya, Professor Dr. Rofina Yasmin Othman, said innovations coming from research in universities were important. She stated that such efforts were being supported by the University of Malaya, citing examples of university born startup companies.
