HEARING PROBLEM IS NO BARRIER FOR A DISABLED GRADUATE TO BE ACTIVE ON CAMPUS

By: Nurul Ezzaty Mohd Azhari

SERDANG, March 23 – A Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Sciences) graduate, Hazmin Hazman, 24, who graduated today at the 45th Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Convocation Ceremony, has never felt the hearing problem he has faced since childhood is a burden or reason for being inactive on campus.

He said since his first semester at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), he had actively participated in various activities and associations, such as stage theatre, choir and becoming the president of the UPM OKU association.

“Sometimes I forget to wear my hearing aids because I’m having too much fun or busy with activities. My message to the OKU students is to forget the burden of disabilities and elevate our spirit.

“There is no need to keep our strengths within us, do not be afraid to try as we are unique gems, and there are plenty of activities in UPM,” he said.

The second child of four siblings admitted that it was difficult for him to listen well while learning in class.

“What I did was to meet the lecturers after class to ask again and spend more time in the library reading books to understand something better.

“I spent a lot of time in the library and sometimes did not have the time to meet the lecturers due to the busy class schedule,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to the lecturers who helped raise funds to repair his hearing aids and the ever-ready assistance from WAZAN and the UPM OKU unit. - UPM
