SERDANG, September 2 - The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FPV), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has celebrated the 65th Independence Day by organising a health care programme for pets belonging to B40 staff with the aid of the Animal Welfare Fund.

During the 65th Independence Day celebration, FPV assisted UPM staff from the B40 group who could not afford animal health care to get treatment for their pets at the UPM Veterinary Hospital with the collected funds.

FPV Dean, Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman Omar, said the Independence Day celebration this time is meaningful because FPV organised a programme to help UPM staff from the B40 group care for their pets.

"Therewith, we can also promote the Animal Welfare Fund to society and help these pet owners to take care of their animal welfare by getting free health checks.

"The Animal Welfare Fund is a collaboration between FPV and the Centre for Management of Waqf, Zakat, and Endowment (WAZAN), UPM, which was initiated at the beginning of 2022 and has successfully collected funds amounting to RM20,000.00," he said.

A total of 24 recipients received free pet health care. Among the treatments were vaccination, deworming, vitamins, and flea medication.

UPM Alumni Executive Officer, Siti Nur Ain Feisal, said the free health package given by FPV greatly eased her burden of providing proper medical treatment for her eight street cats.

"We, in the B40 group, can afford to look after street cats, but we cannot provide health care because it is quite costly. I am thankful that my cats are now getting treatment for their well-being.

"This is the first time that the programme is organised, and it has helped us who keep pets to treat our beloved cats for free for the first time," she said.

Also present at the event was a famous singer, Faizal Tahir, who urged the public to make a donation for the welfare of pets.
