SERDANG, Nov 5 - Kolej 15 of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) recently held a braided Jalinan Kasih @ 15 programme in Kampung Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, Johor,  with the aim of exposing students to rural life and bringing them closer to the villagers.

Director of the Programmme, Nur Alisa Samsuri, said the programme held for the sixth time, enabled college students to interact with the villagers, hence, fostering closer ties and goodwill.

“Among the activities held were a rewang (gotong royong) with the villagers to clean a nearby surau and a cemetery.

“This programme helps in improving students communication skills while interacting with the villagers, and instilling a deep sense of gratitude amongst them,” she said.

She added that the programme was an initiative to form soft skills for some 70 students and college management representatives who took part in the programme. They also gave away donations in kind such as rice and sugar to 25 hard core poor around Parit Raja area.
Village headman, MajdanJamain, meanwhile said through such programme, students were able to understand the cultures and customs of the village community which were different from those in the urban areas, besides enabling them to identify those products produced by small- and medium-sized industries (IKS) in the village.

The programme was held in collaboration with UPM’s Cancer Resource and Education Centre (CaRE) that provided free health screenings to the villagers and participants as well as breast cancer screenings and health advice. – UPM.
