Appointment of Deputy Vice Chancellor

SERDANG – Prof. Datuk Dr. Mad Nasir Shamsudin has been appointed as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for a three-year term, commencing from 1 December 2013 to 30 November 2016.

UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Fauzi Ramlan in his announcement said, the appointment of Prof. Datuk Dr. Mad Nasir made by the Deputy Prime Minister who is also the Minister of Education of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato' Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin is to replace Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris, whose appointment ends on 30 November 2013.

“As the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International), his new portfolio will include improving the development of academic policy, overseeing the quality of teaching and learning, as well as supervising the progress of international affairs and promotion of the university,” he said.

Prof. Datuk Dr. Mad Nasir, 57, started his career in 1984 with the institution as a tutor, followed by his appointment as lecturer in 1986, associate professor in 1994 and since 2000, in recognition of his academic capabilities, he has obtained his full professorship.



Throughout his 28-year tenure, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mad Nasir had also served as the Dean at Faculty of Environmental Studies (2004-2009) and Faculty of Agriculture (2009-2012).

An expert in the field of Agricultural and Resource Economics, he was once appointed as a researcher and consultant at the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Prime Minister’s Department from 1994 to 1995, which led to the success of constructing the Malaysian Agricultural Sector Analysis Model.

Following his vast nation-wide reputation and contribution towards the development of the agricultural sector, he once again involved in the development of the Malaysian Agricultural Policy Analysis Model with the EPU in 2012, besides being a Consultative Panel on Agricultural Productivity of the Malaysian Productivity Corporation.

He received his PhD from Mississippi State University, USA in 1985, BS (Cum Laude) in Agricultural Economics from Louisiana State University, USA, in 1980 and earned his Diploma in Agriculture from Universiti Pertanian Malaysia in 1978.

On the international front, he is a member of Pacific Food System Outlook Forecasting Panel under the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), a network consists of forecasting experts in the agricultural and food sector from all the PECC countries.

In the realm of education, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mad Nasir has been primarily teaching in the fields of International Agricultural Trade, Development and Agricultural Policy and Environmental Economics, whilst his research areas include International Agricultural Trade Policy, Commodity Market Analysis and Agro-environmental Economics.
