55 UPM researchers grab gold medals in PRPI 2016

SERDANG, Nov 16 – Fifty-five Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) researchers out of 206 who submitted their applications for Research and Innovation Designs Exhibition (PRPI) which took place for two days, starting Nov 15, 2016, succeeded with distinction, with each of them receiving a gold medal.

Seventy others received silver medals and 52, bronze.

The exhibition themed “Agriculture, Innovation, Life” is aimed at providing a platform for UPM researchers to showcase their research findings and innovations that have obtained publishing and intellectual properties protection, besides opening up the market for them and establishing useful network from the industries, fund givers as well as the public.

The exhibition also serves as a screening field for UPM researchers before they are eligible to participate in any research contests at a higher level.

As in previous years, 11 clusters were displayed and contested – agriculture and food, Applied Science and Engineering, Bio-system and Biotechnology, business ventures, economy, governance, environment and energy, forestry and biodiversity, humanity and nation building, halal science and management, health management and healthy living, Mathematical sciences, information technology and communications and science and technological materials.

Vice-Chancellor of UPM, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris presented the PRPI Awards 2016 and University Research Award for Pusat Tanggungjawab and Journal-Magazine Publishing categories.

Also present were UPM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Mohd Lila and Director of Research Management Centre (RMC), Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hamiruce Marhaban.

This year’s PRPI was slightly different from the previous one when a sharing of experience and success session by UPM graduates who rose to become Chief Executive Officers (CEO) of start-up companies under InnoHub UPM programme was held, via a forum” How We Build Business from Innovation." It was attended by about 100 participants consisting of lecturers and students.

To mark the closing of the event, an exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in relation to UPM’s participation in the development of Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) between Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) and UPM was held.

UPM was represented by Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini, while MyIPO by its Deputy Director (Strategies and Technical), Zulkarnain Muhammad.

Also present at the closing and prize-presentation ceremony were head of administration of Deputy Vice-Chancellor’s Office (Research and Innovation), Shahriman Hashim and other senior university officials. – UPM.
