Research Grants

Universiti Putra Malaysia was the highest grant recipient for research among all public Universities in Malaysia in the 9th Malaysia Plan. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), through its Science Fund, finances most of UPM's multidisciplinary research. Projects under Science Fund that show commercial potential are selected for additional funding under the Techno Fund scheme. Apart from the government funding, UPM also receives assistance for scholarships, seminar sponsorships, study tours and research equipment from several prominent national and international agencies such as MTSF, IDRC, UNDP, WINROCK, WHO, FAO, JICA, EC, TWOWS, ACIAR, CIFOR, IFS, IMO, etc. As at the end of 2010, record has indicated that UPM has received research grants of various categories from the government, private as well as international sources, amounting to approximately RM400 million.

Research Patents

To date, UPM has filed 516 national and international patents (pending and granted), the highest record for a Malaysian university. Over the years, we have also commercialised 21 research products and technologies. A notable research breakthrough by UPM is the Fast Target White Spot Virus Detection Kit, which rescued the shrimp industry from near collapse in the late 1990s. It was estimated that this Kit saved shrimp farmers about RM72 million in potential losses.
