SERDANG - Sahabat Masjid Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Pengurusan Wakaf, Zakat & Endowmen (WAZAN) UPM, together with Putra Bakti UPM recently gave away free petrol to UPM personnel who ride motorcycles to work.
Director of WAZAN UPM, Dr. Razali Othman said such contribution was able to be made following donations received from members of the public and UPM Mosque to help ease the burden of UPM students and personnel.
“All donations we received from the public are given back to the society in the form of free petrol to assist those in need,” he said.
He added that a total of RM1500 was set aside for RON95 free-petrol programme, and it was estimated that 350 UPM personnel riding motorcycles below 110cc, benefitted from the programme.
“I hope that more people will come to WAZAN to donate and give alms to assist the needy so that more of such programmes can be carried out,” he said.
Meanwhile, 200 motorcyclists, comprising UPM students, formed a long queue as early as 9am at Petronas petrol station in UPM to get the free supply.
UPM undergraduate, Noor Asmawe Mohamed Isa, 22, took the opportunity to get the free petrol which he said came in handy for him in one way or another.
“With the semester coming to an end, it is normal for us to run short of our pocket money and I am thankful to UPM for having this free-petrol programme,” he said, expressing his hope for such a programme to be continued in the future to assist needy students. – UPM.
