SERDANG, Feb 23 - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) will continue to strengthen the field of agriculture in line with its position as an agriculture-based university for the development of the sector in the country.

UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris said agriculture has always been UPM’s niche area and as such, the university would remain to helm the field.

She said UPM will reinforce its role to be the leader in the area of food security.

“Agriculture-related programmes such as those relating to trees, plants, food as well as poultry will be enhanced.

“However, UPM will not neglect other areas as they will continue to be given equal emphasis,” she told a press conference here.

She added that UPM as a Research University (RU) will also focus on getting research grants from abroad in view of the prevailing economic condition.

These efforts, she said, were ongoing and will be continued.

She also said many countries, including the European Union, had opened up their grants to other nations, particularly on matters or research pertaining to food security.

Last year, UPM succeeded in obtaining 11 international grants, with a total value of about RM11 million, to help its researchers to carry out research. – UPM
