UPM wins Royal Malaysian Intervarsity Debating Championship 2018

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) emerged champion in the Royal Malaysian Intervarsity Debating Championship 2018 for the Malay Language category.

UPM defeated the host, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in the final round held at the PERMATA Pintar National Gifted Centre, UKM.

As the winner, the UPM team took home RM3,000 of prize money, trophies and the winner’s cup.

The UPM team which was represented by four female debaters namely P. Pavithra Panirselvam, 24, Nurul Rashidah Roseli, 23, Has Umierah Ibrahim, 22 and Nur Izzati Suardi, 22, proposed the motion “This House Supports Media Liberation to make Malaysia a More Democratic Country” in the final round of the championship. 

Pavithra was also chosen as the best debater and received the Best Debater in the Final Award.

“I feel delighted and contented with this success. Thank you to everyone who has helped us a lot from the start until the end of the championship,” said Pavithra, a final year student of Bachelor of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language.

She too did not expect to be announced as the best debater and was thankful because she and her teammates had helped UPM to win the championship.

“This success is very meaningful for us,” she said.

The Head of the Student Affairs Division, Fahmi Azar Mistar meanwhile considered the accomplishment of the debate team a sweet victory for UPM.

The Student Affairs Division has always been supportive of any public speaking activities or programmes involving UPM students.

UPM was also the winner of the Royal Malaysian Intervarsity Debating Championship held in 2005 and 2018.
