SERDANG, 19 March – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) will observe the World Book Donation day on every February 14th to encourage book donation from its denizens as well as members of the public, said Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Fauzi Ramlan.
He said in developed countries like the United States of America, the United Kingdom and Japan, they had made book donation a way of life with pride.
“The original intention of the book donation celebration is to encourage people to give books to each other and to organisations like public libraries and welfare centres,” he said when officiating the Book Donation Campaign organised by the Sultan Abdul Samad Library UPM here today.
Professor Emeritus Dr Chin Hoong Fong presented his books to the UPM library at the ceremony.
Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Fauzi expressed his hope that the World Book Donation Day celebration proposed by the UPM chief librarian, Amir Hussain Md Ishak, would be embraced by all students and staff of UPM as well as members of the public so as to make the campaign successful.
“I believe that we need to cultivate this culture among Malaysians,” he said, noting that there were a lot of books available at home and offices which were suitable to be given to libraries.
“I also urge all students and staff of UPM to contribute their books for the library and to make it a noble practice for the sake of expanding knowledge,” said Prof Dr Mohd Fauzi.
Meanwhile, chief librarian Amir said in his speech that the Sultan Abdul Samad Library has been building up its book collection was constantly over the last three years and had since received 23, 700 books and journal in total.
The library’s book donation campaign, he said, was to trigger off the interest of UPM’s denizens and the public to donate their books to the library.
He said they had published the schedule of the book donation campaign at the faculty level until the month of August.
