AUCKLAND – Twelve Bachelor of Chemistry students of the Faculty of Science,  Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) recently underwent a Science and Technology Application Research (STAR) mobility programme at the University of Auckland (UoA), New Zealand.

The Officer-In-Attendance, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irmawati Ramli said preparations and plans for the programme were outlined by the students themselves, led by Mohamad Najib Ab Aziz.

“The School of Chemical Sciences of UoA has responded positively by carrying out all the academic activities which have been planned for all participants. This is the first time that such a mobility programme is held in New Zealand,” he said.

Programme Director, Mohamad Najib Ab Aziz said students who took part in the visit were able to learn new things and broaden their perspectives and thoughts to be more creative and innovative.

“This STAR mobility programme has provided them with the experience of learning chemistry where they are taught how to carry out research on green chemistry and even  given the chance to take part in lab teaching,” he said.

Chemistry Undergraduates Club President of the Science Faculty, UPM, Rudy Hakim said the programme managed to meet its objective in fostering better ties between UPM and University of Auckland.

“This mobility programme has made the participants to be more competitive and inspired them to strive harder to achieve success in the field of science and technology,” he said.

Among the activities that were carried out were Inorganic Chemistry which was handled by Prof. Christian Hartinger, and revelation of research findings by Prof. James Wright. They were also able to exchange views and information on the finding of their researches with their counterparts, make visits to laboratories and witness the demonstration of research equipment.
