KUALA LUMPUR, 16 NOV – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) records the highest performance by receiving a 6-star (Outstanding) rating in the Malaysian University and University Colleges Rating System (SETARA) 2017.

A total of eight universities received the 6-star ratings in the Category of Mature University (Universities which are 16 years old and above): UPM, UM, USM, UKM, UTM, International Medical University, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Monash University Malaysia.

SETARA evaluations are based on four criteria, which are General (40%), Teaching and Learning (30%), Research (20%) and Services (10%). The objective of SETARA is to help universities to build a strong foundation in three main functions; teaching, research and services through the evaluation criteria and metrics.

Of 105 universities and university colleges, only 71 are eligible for evaluation in SETARA 2017, and 58 among them have received 4-star ratings and above.

The SETARA certificate was awarded by the Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh in the SETARA 2017 ceremony held at InterContinental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur today.

UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dato’ Dr. Aini Ideris said that the SETARA rating is important because UPM is able to address any weaknesses and take strategic approaches to improve the overall performance of UPM.

‘The ranking and rating of UPM is not to be ignored for it influences the perception of stakeholders, such as students, government, industries, parents, public, international partners and other parties who would contribute to the reputation and income of UPM,’ she added.
