UPM establish an Auxiliary Police unit to enhance ‘Safe Campus’

SERDANG, 24 June (UPM) – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has established Auxiliary Police unit to increase the quality of security in the campus area towards 'Safe Campus' and, holds privileges and police authority to carry out duties.

Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar had presented an Watikah Polis Bantuan to UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Fauzi Ramlan here today.

Tan Sri Datuk Seri Khalid said in his speech that an auxiliary policeman not only function as PDRM’s ‘eyes and ears’ but to assist in preventing crimes at respective premises effectively.

"As a uniform unit, we should be a good exemplary and be in the frontline to interact and take care of community safety,” he said at the presentation ceremony of Watikah Polis Bantuan at Dewan Taklimat, UPM.

He added that the establishment of the Auxiliary Police is under Department IX, Police Act No. 41 / 46 and Police Regulatory 1970 that has existed since year 1948.



"At present, a total of 18,649 members spread across 152 Auxiliary Police agencies operating throughout the country and a total of 47 Auxiliary Police agencies in Selangor which has 4,363 members,” he said.

He also suggested that UPM build an Auxiliary Police Control Centre in a strategic location to replace the existing one.

UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Fauzi said that the credential aims to enable UPM security guards to have a police authority and to qualify them to carry firearms during their duty to ensure security protection around UPM campus.

"I am confident with the establishment of Auxiliary Police as part of our effort to reduce crime rates around campus area," he said.

He says UPM will increase the number of CCTV all around the campus area, in addition to existing ones at Faculty and Department level.

Monitoring will not only be implemented manually but using the state-of-the-art technology in line with current needs," he said.



Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM) approved UPM Auxiliary Police establishment with 207 Auxiliary Policemen.

UPM is the third Public Higher Institution (IPTA) that has obtained approval of its own auxiliary police after Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTeM). – UPM
