SERDANG, August 5 - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and 1MCC Sports Sdn Bhd (1Malaysia Connecting Communities) have intensified their cooperation to develop football skills and talents among teenagers in an effort to produce the country’s footballers of caliber.

Towards this, both sides have signed a letter of intent for cooperation in the aspects of facilitating, coaching and developing football at a ceremony held in UPM.

UPM was represented by Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr.Mohd Fauzi Ramlan, while 1MCC by its Chief Executive Officer, Datin Vivienne Leong, and the signing waswitnessed by UPM Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran and 1MCC Chairman, Dato’ Chan Tien Ghee.

The duration of cooperation is for 10 years.

Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fauzi said under the move, UPM will be 1MCC’s consultancy partner for football development programme and 1MCC league venue.

“1MCC will assist UPM to facilitate, organize sport events, seminars and other related programmes besides making mobility arrangements for UPM students and staff to go to the United Kingdom and gain experience in organizing tournaments while 1MCC has the chance to use the facility at UPM’s Kolej 10 football field and develop football through the organization of 1MCC league championships,” he said.

1MCC started using UPM football field as a venue for its 1MCC league since 2013.

Meanwhile, Datin Vivienne Leong said UPM-1MCC cooperation would not only help to develop football and scouting of new young and skillful talents, but also expose the coaches to new experiences in organizing championships and courses.

“UPM has been supportive since the start of 1MCC League at UPM in 2013. The response for the league, from teams in the Klang Valley, has been overwhelming,” she said.

She also said a total of 92 teams had taken part in the championship under three age groups  – Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 which were divided into Division 1 and Division 2.

“We adopt a holistic approach. Besides playing football, their discipline can also be formed via 1MCC League. The tournaments are held during the weekends and certainly, this will not disrupt their studies,” she said.

She added that 1MCC planned to take skillful and talented young footballers to train or witness football trainings of the 1MCC’s 10 “Partner Clubs” in four European nations and the United States of America.

The 1MCC “Partner Clubs” are West Ham United, Charlton Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday in England; Glasgow Rangers (Scotland); Sampdoria, Chievo and  Verona (Italy) and Torres Calcio (women football club in Italy); Utrecht FC (Netherlands) and  Portland Timbers (USA).– UPM.
