SERDANG – A total of 222 Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) students participated in the “BioChallenge 3.0 2019” programme and expressed their biology self through a variety of interesting activities.
The three-day programme themed “Unlock Your Biology Self” had gathered students from different fields of study. It was organised by the Biology Student Club (KMB), Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, UPM.
Among the activities held were “BioTALK”, “BioINFOGRAPHIC”, “BioVIDEO”, “BioINNOVATE”, “BioESSAY” and “BioPHOTO”.
The programme was a great platform for students to explore the world of biological sciences and to be creative and innovative in resolving the challenges in the competitions they participated.
BioChallenge 3.0 2019 had attracted student participation from the Faculty of Science (190 students), Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (18), Faculty of Economics and Management (four), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (three), Faculty of Agriculture (two), Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (two) and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (two) and one from Faculty of Forestry.
Programme and KMB advisor, Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir, said the “BioChallenge 3.0 2019” programme this year had a different theme from last year. The theme “Unlock Your Biology Self” required students to be bold in showcasing their knowledge, talent as well as skills in biology.
“Students are trained to think out of the box and find solutions for different problems related to biology while inculcating curiosity pertinent to a future scientist,” he said.
He said “BioChallenge 3.0 2019” is the greatest achievement for KMB as it has successfully attracted the interest of hundreds of students from various study backgrounds to engage in the world of science, especially biology.
“This year’s response is very encouraging as there has been an increase in participation compared to the previous year. This year, KMB made a little difference by not limiting participation of students only from the Faculty of Science, rather it opened up the opportunity to all UPM undergraduates”, he said.
“BioChallenge 3.0 2019” is a UPM initiative, in particular, the Department of Biology’s in efforts to produce capable, responsible, knowledgeable and competitive students in the future.
The programme also received sponsorship and support from the Faculty of Science, UPM and from independent individuals. The programme managed to raise RM2,380.
Programme director, Illy Husna Ahmad Zainal, hopes the programme will provide space and opportunity for students to showcase their talents in various fields such as photography, videography, public speaking, writing as well as innovation.
“What’s more interesting is that the end products were inspired by themselves and their surrounding environment. Science is not a field that can only be studied and explored by Science stream students as we humans are all a part of Science,” she said. - UPM
