SERDANG – The Higher Education Ministry has announced the appointment of Prof. Dato’ Dr. Husaini Omar as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research And Innovation) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for three years, with effect from February 15, 2017 till February 14, 2020.
With the appointment, he will helm the Office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research And Innovation) as his portfolio, and will manage matters on university research and commercialization of university research products.
He replaces Prof. Dato Dr. Mohd. Azmi Mohd Lila whose contract ended in December 31 last year, through an official letter of appointment he received from Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.
Members of the UPM management said Prof. Husaini’s appointment will further support UPM in strengthening its position as a research university as proven in his deep commitment for research activities, innovations and commercialization of research products.
His extensive experience in the field of research and as the Managing Director of UPM Holdings Sdn. Bhd is set to bring UPM’s achievements in research and innovation to the international level.
Born in March 10, 1963 in Kelantan, Prof. Husaini specialized in Petroleum Geology and Engineering Geology, having graduated with Bachelor of Science from University of Malaya in 1988, a Master’s degree from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom in 1994, and a PhD degree from UPM in 2002.
He worked at UPM’s Faculty of Engineering in 1996 as a lecturer and as an Associate Professor in 2002 before becoming a full Professor in 2011.
He was appointed as the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 2002 to 2006, UPM Director of Business Centre in 2006 to 2009 and Managing Director of UPM Holdings since 2009 until today.
He has published nine books, chapters in books and paper proceedings. He and his team also supervised 20 other postgraduate students and he had obtained several patents from the United States as well as Malaysia.
Prof. Husaini has been accorded with several local and international recognitions. At the national level, he received, amongst others, the National Young Scientist Award in 2000, National Youth Award and he was also the Gold Medallist of the International Technology Expo. At the international arena, he was the recipient of WIPO Gold Medal from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva in 2000 and the Gold medallist of INPEX USA in 2001.
In 2003, he received the UPM Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship Award and was listed in the Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering in its 2003-2004 publication. For his vast contributions to the Malaysian Technology Expo, the Malaysian Association of Research Scientists, he was awarded the MARS Service Award in 2011.
He is also the International Jury panellist for Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel-ISEF) in the USA from 2002 until today and Chairman of Intel-ISEF Scientific Review Committee (SRC) for the Malaysian chapter for MSRM, and Chairman of the Permanent Court Panel for MRSM Budding Scientists.
Prof. Husaini is also Fellow of The Geological Society of London, a member of the Association of International Association of Engineering Geology (IAEG), Paris, and member of the Malaysian Association of Engineering and Technology (MSET).
In 2012, he was bestowed the Darjah Kebesaran Setia Mahkota Kelantan Yang Amat Terbilang (P.S.K) by His Majesty the Sultan of Kelantan in conjunction with his birthday.
On December 11, 2016, he was conferred the Darjah Kebesaran Dato Paduka Mahkota Selangor Yang Amat Mulia (D.P.M>S) which carries the title Dato’ by His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj in conjunction with his birthday.
