SERDANG, Sep 14 – The roadshow (Jerayawara) of the 50th anniversary celebration of Rukun Negara held at the Sultan Abdul Samad Library, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), was celebrated with various activities related to the appreciation of Rukun Negara.

The activities include reciting the pledge, video screenings, handing out promotional materials, quizzes, singing songs and exhibitions.

Chief Librarian of the Sultan Abdul Samad Library, UPM, Muzaffar Shah Kassim, said the appreciation of the five principles of Rukun Negara is the mainstay of the unity of the Malaysian nation.

He said the library was selected as the location of the 50th anniversary celebration of Rukun Negara roadshow is very much in line with the function of the library as a centre for disseminating information.

“The library as a local community centre is able to disseminate information and pamphlets on the principles of Rukun Negara and nationhood, as well as organising various activities that foster the spirit of unity among the community.

"As Malaysians who are patriotic and love the country and the principles of Rukun Negara, we, at UPM, will always give full support to such programme," he said.

He said the practice of reciting the pledge of Rukun Negara had become a routine since the school days after being declared on August 31, 1970 in conjunction with the 13th anniversary of Malaysia's independence by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the late Tuanku Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Zainal Abidin .

"This practice coincides with the suggestion of the second Prime Minister of the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein that Rukun Negara should be fully practised by Malaysians since school and not be a piece of meaningless document," he said.

Meanwhile, the programme coordinator of the 50th anniversary celebration of Rukun Negara roadshow, Hasnita Ibrahim, who is also BERNAMA Information Manager, said the programme started on August 24 involving 33 selected locations nationwide.

It ends on September 15.

Various activities related to Rukun Negara were promoted during the roadshow such as Insta Challenge, Rukun Negara Hour, Webinar, e-Treasure Hunt, Serial Talks and documentaries. - UPM
