SERDANG, Oct 27 - Kelab Generation 12 (G12) of Kolej Ke-12, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), organized the 11th Lantern Festival to expose students to the uniqueness of the Chinese culture.
College Principal, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faieza Abd Aziz said through such a programme, the uniqueness of cultures in the country could be introduced to and better understood by international students pursuing their studies at UPM.
“Students are encouraged to understand the cultures of this country, and through this college activity, students are able to explore learning outside the classroom,” she said.
During the Lantern Festival, G12 put up a stage drama, Kafe 1+1, which revolved around a love story between owner of Kafe 1+1, Deng Yu Qi, and his partner, Yu Jia Yi, who died young after suffering from an ailment - neuron motor.
Chairman programme of G12 session 2015/2016 who is also the director of 2016 Lantern Festival, Lee Long Shern, meanwhile, said the festival had succeeded in drawing the interest of students from all races who came to see the play.
“Although this Lantern Festival was celebrated last month, it is my hope that through this drama, Kafe 1+1, the audience could understand the significance of the festival,” he said.
The festival was organized by Kelab G12 and Sekretariat Kerohanian dan Sahsiah MTM Kolej 12, with the cooperation of Kolej Ke-12 management and UPM Student Affairs Division (BHEP).
Chairman of MTM Kolej Ke-12, Muhammad Asyraf Suriah, meanwhile, described the drama as interesting, expressing his hope to join the programme next year.
“Twice, I participated in these Lantern festivals. This year’s programme, however, featured something interesting compared to last year, and the show was really superb,” he said.
First Year student of Modern Languages and Communication Faculty, Adibah Fasihah said, the main character in the drama had left such a deep impression in her and that celebrating the festival with her friends was a new experience for her.
“This is the first time I that I have taken part in this programme. Although the drama was presented in the Chinese language, I was able to understand it by reading the subtitles as contained in the slide,” she said. – UPM.
