SERDANG, 4 Nov – The dream of a disabled Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) graduate Choo Sze Yi, 33, came to terms when he was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (Economics) by Tuanku Chancellor UPM, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah at the 41st UPM Convocation Ceremony.

The second child out of three siblings had a muscular problem from the age of 12, and since the past two years, he relies on a wheelchair to move around when his health began to deteriorate.

His father, Choo Yew Chun, 60, had to carry him up to the second floor where the Faculty of Economics and Management was situated if he had an appointment with his supervisor, Prof. Dr. Alias Radam.

"I am very grateful to my parents who have sacrificed so much in assisting me to complete my studies. My dad never complains about having to carry me up to the second floor to meet my supervisor," said Dr. Choo.

Dr. Choo also thanked Prof. Dr. Alias for helping and facilitating his study such as by having the supervisory session on the ground floor or at the worker's office, after knowing his health condition.

"When I failed to collect data within a year, I was desperate to change my thesis title, but Prof. Dr. Alias advised me to get the relevant data from the Companies Commission of Malaysia which I finally succeeded," he said.
