SERDANG, 29 Oct – Her mother’s determination in taking good care of the family as a single mom has become the main source of inspiration for Pavitra Panir Selvam, 24, who received a degree in Bachelor of Education (Teaching English as a Second Language).

“Despite being raised in a less fortunate family, it did not hinder me from becoming a motivator for women in Malaysia,” said the graduate of the Faculty of Educational Studies, in conjunction with the 42nd Convocation Ceremony, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

Pavitra who won the title of Miss MalaysiaIndian Global 2018 recently said that her intention to participate in the competition was not to become a model, but it was to empower women in Malaysia. “When I looked at the competition advertisement, I was interested with its main objective which was to help women to develop intellectually, and it was not to assess on beauty alone,” she said.

The elder of two siblings who was raised by a single mother since she was a year old, was the best debater in the 2018 Royal Debate Competition between Higher Education Institutions.

“To all women in Malaysia who feel neglected, I am always with you regardless of race and religion. Let’s stand up together, and believe in ourselves that we are capable of contributing to this beloved country,” she added.

Currently, she is pursuing a Master of Education degree in Educational Psychology in UPM while being actively involved in programmes organised by MMICare Association (the organiser of 2018 Miss MalaysiaIndian Global competition).
