Dr. Paramasivam honoured at South Africa contribution in Tamil Language


SOUTH AFRICA – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Paramasivam Muthusamy from the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) received a Certificate of Appreciation for his consultation, guidance and promotion of Tamil Language, Arts and Culture in South Africa.

The appreciation was given by Dr. Raj Gounder, a Senior Manager at the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture which falls under the Ministry of Arts and Culture in South Africa.  

The event took place in 25 November 2015 at the Durban Merebank Tamil School Society Hall during the Karthigai Deepam Festival.  A total of 45 Malaysian delegates from all walks of life and more than 1,000 South African Tamils attended this ceremony.

Dr Paramasivam Muthusamy is a well known figure in South Africa who has been promoting Tamil diaspora, language and culture for the past 20 years. Various activities that had been conducted in South Africa included those on the promotion of spoken Tamil language, seminars and spoken Tamil dialogue sessions, arts and cultural performances, home visits, community engagement, recognizing the contribution of local Tamil stalwarts and the hosting of a vibrant Malaysian Food Festival.

As a result of this community engagement project, UPM is expected to receive 40 delegates from the Tamil diaspora countries such as South Africa, Mauritius, Reunion Island, Singapore and Malaysia to promote the spoken Tamil project in 2017. - UPM
