Appointment of UPM Deputy Vice Chancellor


SERDANG, 1 Sept - Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ir. Renuganth Varatharajoo has been appointed UPM’s Deputy vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Relations) to a three year term beginning September 1st 2012 until August 31st 2015.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ir. Renuganth, 39, replaces Prof. Dr. Tai Shzee Yew, whose term as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Relations) expired on August 31st 2012.

He holds a Bachelor in Engineering (Honours) degree from the Institute of Bandung, Bandung Indonesia, Master in Launchers and Satellites from Ecole National Supérieure de ľ Aéronautique et de ľ Espace, Toulouse, France and obtained his PhD from Technische Universität Dresden, Dresden, Germany.

Kedah-born Renuganth joined UPM nine years ago, as a lecturer in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Faculty of Engineering in 2003 and was made Associate Professor in 2008, and Professor in 2012.

He was the Head of Division, Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Relations) in 2011 until 2012 prior to his appointment as the Director, Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Relations) in 2012.

In the professional field, he was appointed the President (International), Committee on Space Research (COSPAR).

In his years with UPM, he has been active in research, especially in the field of  Aerospace Engineering and his scholarly works have been recognized both locally and at the international level.

His current portfolio requires him to lead and be responsible for the overall administrative responsibilities of the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Relations), apart from managing UPM’s network with industry and the community, contributing to the efforts of the university to enhance the quality of teaching, learning, research and generally towards community information development.

The management of the university is confident that the appointment of Prof. Dr.-Ing Ir. Renuganth Varatharajoo will help ensure UPM maintains its Research University status by creating strong relations with all stakeholders including industry, alumni, community, as well as local and international institutions.

Prof. Dr.-Ing Ir. Renuganth Varatharajoo’s vast experience in the field of research will complement UPM’s Third Strategic Plan (2011-2013), which is to strengthen the community’s involvement in generating and sharing knowledge.
