Serdang – A Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) student, Marina Roseli won the Best Presenter Award at Asian Women Eco-Science Forum 2013 (AWESF 2013) through her presentation of a paper on Bodiversity and Sustainable Development in Malaysia.

Marina, a student from Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, represented Malaysia at the forum which was held for the second time specifically for Asian women scientists on 12 to 14 November at Hoam Hoam Faculty House, Seoul National University, Republic of Korea.

Malaysian delegation was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nur Azura Adam along with other members, Marina Salmah Mohamed (PhD student), Nur Athiqah Md Yusof and Nurul Nadia Raja Raja Alang (Masters students).

Dr. Nur Azura said, Marina’s success was derived from strong collaborative work given by each member of the group to make the presentation as the best platform possible to carry the image of Malaysia as the sanctuary for high biological diversity.

"I think the chance of exposure at such an international event, should be fully catered by our students and this victory proves that our students, together with consistent guidance from lecturers, are able to compete internationally," said Dr. Nur Azura.

The forum was held to discuss about current issues with regards to biodiversity, among others, raising awareness about the importance of preserving as well as  conserving the diversity of flora and fauna species, especially in Asian countries.

This year, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development was picked as the forum’s theme while it was jointly organized by the Korea Federation of Women's Science and Technology Associations (KOFWST) along with AMOREPASIFIC Corporation and wholly sponsored by the Ministry of Environment (Republic of Korea), Samsung UHD TV and KBS Media .

Malaysia, Japan, Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, Singapore  and the host, Korea were the 9 Asian countries with 200 participants took part in the forum.

The selection of the representatives process for each country started as early as September and the group of students from Department of Plant Protection were handpicked to represent Malaysia along with the sponsorship deals for flight tickets and accommodation throughout the sessions.

The forum also offered an opportunity for senior and junior scientists among Asian women to improve their international network in the realm of science and technology, and a base for them to especially put the efforts in raising awareness about the importance of preserving biodiversity and sustainability of resources front and centre for the next generation.
