Age is not a factor for a grandmother to pursue a master’s degree

SERDANG, Nov 18 – A grandmother, Dayang Masnah Abang Dawi, 54, believes that age is not an obstacle for her to further her studies at a master’s level.

She has successfully earned a Master of Human Resource Development via distance learning at the 43rd UPM Convocation Ceremony this morning.

After completing her diploma studies at the MARA Institute of Technology in Kuching, she enrolled in a Bachelor of Human Resource Development via distance learning in 2012 and a Master of Human Resource Development in 2017 at UPM.

Dayang had to travel back and forth from Kuching to UPM Serdang Campus to attend meeting sessions with the lecturers two to three times each semester.

She worked hard throughout her studies and believed that time management skills are a key factor in achieving success for someone who works and studies part-time. After working hours, she would review her courses consistently.

“I always advise my children and grandchildren to use time wisely to gain new knowledge and useful skills because I think, if I am able to do it, there is no reason for you not to”, said Dayang who has three children and five grandchildren.

She is now working as a manager in a telecommunication company in Kuching and intends to further her studies at the PhD level. - UPM
