5,000 fruit saplings up for sale at Ekspo Pertanian

SERDANG, Oct 17 – About 5,000 fruit saplings produced by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), including a variety of durian clones, rambutan, guava and jackfruit, will be put up for sale at Ekspo Pertanian during UPM’s 40th Convocation, to be held from Oct 20 to 26.

These saplings, certified under Plant Material Verification Certification as cloned species produced by UPM, carry the assurance of purity in breed and quality that fulfil the standards set by the Agriculture Department.

UPM University Agriculture Park Director, Prof. Dr Japar Sidik Bujang said durian saplings from D 24, D 99 (Kop Kecil), D 168 (Hajah Hasmah) and D 197 (Raja Kunyit) clones were among those that will be sold.

R191 type rambutan seedlings, MA 224 type mango, J33 jackfruit and guava GU15 saplings will also be up for sale at the expo to be held at Bukit Expo UPM from 10 am to 10 pm. The theme for this year’s exhibition is “Pioneering Agriculture, Aiming For International Reputation.”

He said orchid lovers, meanwhile, will have the opportunity to buy various colourful species of these beautiful and attractive blooms at Orchid Pavilion, Bukit Expo.

He also said beef and venison will also be sold at the Putra Mart TPU’s stall.

Fun activities to be held include “Fun Ride and UPM Obstacle Challenge”, a Rakan Muda programme that will test mental and physical endurance of contestants in running through obstacles, feeding the horses, deer and goats at the poultry exhibition and mini zoo.



A Fishing Competition will also be held at UPM Kolam 2 and Kolam 3 on Oct 22. Prof. Dr. Japar released about one tonne of patin fish in Kolam 2 today in preparation for the contest.

Meanwhile, an innovation exhibition will feature a green technology product to rid of pomacea spp./apple snails which have become pests and threaten rice crops.

The resulting product by a group of researchers, led by Prof. Dr. Rita Muhamad Awang from the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, will be displayed at a research exhibition stall throughout the duration of the expo. – UPM.
