ASIATIC FORMED RM 1M FUND FOR UPM

SERDANG, 29 May – SERDANG, 29 May – Asiatic Development Berhad (ASIATIC) has formed a fund of RM1mil for University Putra Malaysia (UPM) to be used towards learning and research.

UPM’s Vice Cancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah said before the MoA signing ceremony, held here, today, that the fund will be used as student scholarship, sponsorship for programs relevant to UPM and ASIATIC and also as funding for teaching and learning activities in UPM.

“The Tan Sri (Dr.) Lim Goh Tong Endowment Fund was created to commemorate ASIATIC’s founder, Tan Sri (Dr) Lim and his contributions, while a scholarship grant known as Tan Sri (Dr) Lim Goh Tong Scolarship shall be given to eligible UPM students,” he added.

The MoA was signed between ASIATIC’s chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Amin Osman and Datuk Dr.Nik Mustapha, representing UPM. Both entities will appoint 3 representatives respectively to form a committee to manage the funds.

UPM was selected to shoulder the social responsibility of educating and producing students of the highest quality to be future leaders of the country, according to Tan Sri Mohd Amin in his speech.

”ASIATIC, on the other hand, has great experience in the palm oil industry which in turn, facilitates its collaboration with UPM, an institution with vast experience in agro based research. We hope that UPM student’s practical programs will be conducted not only in ASIATIC but also in other companies under Genting Group,” he said.

ASIATIC has been focussing on plantation, real estate and bio-technology since its inception in 1977. It became a subsidiary of Genting Berhad in 1980. This company is one of the nation’s four biggest plantation companies, with its cumulative plantation area of 66,000 hectares. Once the plantations in Kalimantan start operating, the size shall increase to 160,000 hectares.
